Reimagining the Economy: Deb Nelson on the Just Economy

A just economy supports the well-being of all people and the planet. Our economies should serve life, not the other way around.

The world is not lacking in solutions. What is often lacking is the willingness to recognize, support, and invest in the people and communities already creating the best solutions. Too often, those with the most power overlook the people closest to the challenges and the possibilities for positive change.

As we witness the degradation of environmental, economic, and social systems, it's becoming harder to deny that our futures are deeply interconnected. Our individual well-being is inseparable from the well-being of one another and of the planet we share. When people lose sight of that interconnectedness, they create systems that concentrate wealth and opportunity for the few while overlooking the needs of most people and the ecosystems that support life, and that harms all of us.

We don't have to accept economies that work only for the privileged. We can shift the flow of capital and power to support healthy communities and systems, and in doing so, create economies rooted in shared prosperity and collective flourishing.

What if we measured economic success not only by what we produce or consume, but by what we leave behind? A stewardship economy recognizes that prosperity is not something we simply extract or accumulate; rather, it is something we cultivate and pass forward.
