Making California a regenerative economy

One of California’s best resources for environmental stewardship is itself something of a hidden gem. Resource Conservation Districts, or RCDs, are special districts authorized by the State of California to support natural resource conservation and sustainable agriculture on public and private lands across the Golden State.

A just economy supports the well-being of all people and the planet. Our economies should serve life, not the other way around. The world is not lacking in solutions. What is often lacking is the willingness to recognize, support, and invest in the people and communities already creating the best solutions.

What if we measured economic success not only by what we produce or consume, but by what we leave behind? A stewardship economy recognizes that prosperity is not something we simply extract or accumulate; rather, it is something we cultivate and pass forward.

The Monterey Bay is under threat. Our ocean, which supports one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on Earth as well as $3.3 billion in tourism and a $42 million fishing industry, is about to be sold to oil and mining companies.

One of the biggest challenges people face today in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties is affordable housing. For Catherine Stihler, working to create affordable housing as the CEO of Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay is one of the most simultaneously challenging and rewarding endeavors she’s undertaken in her career.
